This year, Major League Hacking (MLH) is celebrating our 10th anniversary! MLH was founded in 2013 with the mission of empowering hackers. One of the chief ways we’ve carried out this mission is through the MLH Hackathon League, which has grown to support hundreds of hackathons across the globe and 150k+ developers each year.
This year is no different — our 2024 Hackathon League Season schedule is packed with new hackathons and challenges from over 18+ partners!
The theme for our 2024 Hackathon Season is Dream Big! In 2024, MLH plans to continue expanding our programs to serve even more hackers than last year, and we’re challenging our hackathon organizers to do the same!
Before we jump into our exciting announcements for this year, let’s take a step back and refresh ourselves on the basics.
What is a hackathon?
A hackathon is best described as an “invention marathon”. Anyone who has an interest in technology attends a hackathon to learn, build & share their creations over the course of a weekend in a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere. You don’t have to be a programmer, and you certainly don’t have to be majoring in computer science.
Hackathons are about bringing your crazy ideas to reality through technology. It’s an event where anyone, regardless of their individual field can come & participate to learn, build & share their creations.
Meet Your 2024 Mascot
Each year, MLH creates a new mascot to celebrate the start of the new Hackathon Season. Our 2024 Hackathon Season mascot is Hanson the Hardware Hippo! To get your hands on this year’s mascot swag, join us at an upcoming in-person MLH event.

With each Hackathon Season comes new prizes, challenges, and exciting benefits from our Hackathon League partners! To enter one of our partner challenges, register and attend an MLH hackathon. Many of our partners will give you free access to credits and resources to get started on your hackathon project!
An Event for All Types of Hackers
To further our mission of empowering hackers, we’ve evolved our programs to make them even more accessible! We introduced Global Hack Week as a monthly series, started hosting digital hackathons every single weekend, rolled out the Pizza Fund to support clubs on campus, brought back Hackcon again in-person, and so much more!
